False Alarms
Many false alarms are caused by wrong siting of detectors,
incomplete information about a detector’s capabilities,
or insect damage.
If you are having problems with false alarms, check the following:-
What type of detector is it? Is it passive infra red, microwave, radar, combination microwave and passive infra red, glass breakage detector, or another type of detector. Each type of detector has it own advantages and disadvantages, and different detectors will have different reasons for false alarming.
Insects are the most common reason for false alarms. Spray around the detector with a surface insecticide, and remove any spider webs and spiders on or near the detector.
Do not spray the detector.
Ensure that the area involved is closed, with connecting doors closed, and exterior windows closed. Check that detectors are not looking at an intermittent source of heated air such as a Refrigerator, Fax, Computer or other machinery which may switch on at irregular intervals.
Has the problem started to happen only recently? If so, what has changed in that period of time? For instance, lightning strikes are a possible problem, as they may damage the alarm processor, or other parts of circuitry
When was the battery installed in the alarm? All batteries will eventually wear out, and rechargeable batteries are no exception. If your battery is more than 3-4 years old, the battery may need replacement.
